Are you or someone you know affected by diabetes?

We want to find ways of sharing health information with people affected by diabetes to help them care for themselves and their families.

 

About the Study

We want to know if and how text messages can help people affected by diabetes to stay healthy, especially during disease outbreaks like COVID-19.


Who Can Participate?

You are eligible to join the study if you:

  • Are 18 years or older AND

  • Live in Georgia AND

  • Have a cellphone that accepts/sends text messages AND

  • If female at birth, are not currently pregnant AND

  • Are willing to spend up to 4 hours of your time over 12 months*

You also must be affected by diabetes in one or more of the following ways:

  • Have been told by a healthcare provider that you have diabetes or pre-diabetes OR

  • Are at risk for diabetes (for example, overweight/obesity, high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, gestational diabetes) OR

  • Have a family history of diabetes (for example, have a parent or sister/brother) OR

  • Are a caregiver of someone with diabetes

 

If you decide to participate, what will we ask you to do?

Study activities will take a total of 4 hours over 1 year.  

You will be asked to:

  • Complete 3 surveys (40 – 70 minutes total)

    • When you join (20-40 mins)*

    • After the 4-month text message period (10-15 minutes)

    • At the end of 12-month period (10-15 minutes)

  • Get 16 weekly text messages during the first 4 months of the study

  • Respond to 1 text message a month during the first 4 months of the survey to tell us if you did a COVID-19 test that month

*Survey times may vary

There are other ways to participate:

  • Contribute social media data to the PEACH2 Social Media Study

  • Participate in an individual Zoom/phone interview about your experience in the study between months 5 and 8 (60 minutes)

 
 

Who is Doing this Study

This study is a collaboration between Morehouse School of Medicine, Emory University, and Georgia Institute of Technology. This research is being funded by the US National Institutes of Health and its National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (grant number P30DK111024).

 
 
 

Why are We Doing this Study?

Adults of any age at risk for or living with diabetes are at increased risk for severe illnesses from COVID-19. This important research will help identify challenges and solutions to COVID-19 testing among minority populations in Georgia.
